Past and future doomsday predictions with a side of close asteroid impacts.
Can you believe it has already been a year since the Mayans predicted the end of the world as we know it? Time flies!
Last year's random reason to be stressed out was not exactly new. Doomsday predictions have been around about as long as there have been days to predict doom upon.
The oldest known end-of-the-world prophecy is etched into a clay tablet (not kidding) from a 3,000-year-old society and it says the Earth will end when children no longer obey their parents and every man wants to write a book. Uh oh.
From earth-shattering comets, to religious occurrences, to it-just-seems-like-a-good-day prophecies, the end has always been near – except when it wasn't. Many prophets simply postpone their apocalypses for later dates when they don’t occur the first time. If we as a species do not have much credibility when it comes to forecasting doom, it’s a wonder if we should look too far into the published predictions of Nostradamus and Sir Isaac Newton.
When humans aren’t plotting the end of days, the solar system is doing it for us. From the eventual supernova of the sun, to hurtling world-altering asteroids just a smidge too close to Earth, a government shutdown seems like a minor issue.

Could we go out like the dinosaurs did? Well, asteroids try to give the Earth hugs more than you think. When we had a total of four close calls in 2012, it's no wonder we were started marking our days on the Mayan calendar.
How close are we talking? Within the distance of the moon, which is 238,857 miles away. Many come within fractions of that distance. Some are large enough to significantly alter life on Earth. Read More Original Post
