France
"Saint Valentin" or Valentine's Day in France is celebrated in pretty much the same was as in other western countries. Saint Valentine's story was not a cheerful one. After performing weddings of soldiers who were forbidden to marry under a Christian service, the popular saint was jailed and then killed. According to legend, before his execution he wrote a letterto his jailer's daughter who he had healed and signed it "Your Valentine." In 1400 France, princess Isabel of Bavaria apparently created a "High Court of Love" on the day remembering Saint Valentin.Taken from PolicyMic By Marguerite Ward
Australia
- In Australia during the gold rush, miners who were flushed with new found wealth from the Ballarat mines were willing to pay a pricey sum for elaborate valentines. Merchants in Australia would send orders of a thousand pounds at a time. The most extravagant of valentines were made of a satin cushion, perfumed, ornately designed with flowers, colored shells, and would also have a taxidermy humming bird or bird of paradise adorning it. This was all contained in a neatly decorated box which were considered of high standing, fashionable and most expensive.

On Malaysia's day of love, which falls on the seventh day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar, women write their phone numbers on oranges before throwing them into the closest river with hopes that the man of their dreams might pick one up. Fruit vendors often collect the oranges, which are considered a lucky fruit, and resell them at the market—phone numbers and all! Can't you see a romantic comedy flick starting with a guy finding a "call me" orange in his bag of groceries?
