Pistorius was acquitted of murder but convicted of culpable homicide which meant, at most, he was facing 15 years in prison. Judge Thokozile Masipa said the sentence was about "achieving the right balance."
South African double-amputee Olympian Oscar Pistorius was sentenced on Tuesday to a maximum of five years imprisonment for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp last year.
The Olympian was also sentenced to three years in prison for unlawfully firing a gun in a restaurant in a separate incident weeks before Steenkamp's 2013 shooting death. Judge Thokozile Masipa ordered that sentence to be wholly suspended.
Pistorius could be released after 10 months in jail to serve the remainder under house arrest, according to legal experts.

"Men such as Pistorius have had their lives ruined"
Not quite as ruined as Reeva though
Oscar Pistorius should not be going to jail | Simon Jenkins
Simon Jenkins: First thoughts: Pistorius’s life is ruined. No one will be deterred by his sentence. Imprisonment is a brutalist response that achieves nothing in such cases
Pistorius.... Just ridiculous, good behaviour should be expected not rewarded, house arrest is not prison... Not even close
