Boston mayor Thomas Menino, in throwback form from politicians of yesteryear, tosses out the first pitch from the stands at Fenway Park in 2012. On Tuesday, the 70-year-old Democrat says he’s looking forward to the ‘World Series cup’ returning to Boston.
Boston has been home to every major sports trophy over the last decade, so maybe that’s why its mayor has a hard time keeping all of the names in order.
Thomas Menino stumbled — as he often does — when discussing the Red Sox and the World Series on Tuesday, saying that he’s looking forward to the “World Series Cup” returning to the Commonwealth.
“Tomorrow night, the never (say) die Red Sox, play in their third World Series in the last nine years,” Menino said in Boston. “(We’re) rooting hard to bring back the World Series Cup to Boston, like we did in 2004 and 2007.”
Whoops.
Then again, these flubs have become par for the course with the retiring mayor.
In 2012, with the Celtics battling the Heat in the Eastern Conference Finals, Menino praised Boston’s “heart” and gave a lot of the credit to “KJ” and “Hondo.” He, of course, was referring to Kevin Garnett and Rajon Rondo.
In 2010 he had a cross-sport mixup when, at the dedication of Bobby Orr’s statue outside the TD Garden, he rattled off many of the city’s most memorable sports moments. He nailed it with Orr (that would’ve been wicked embarrassing), John Havlicek’s steal and Doug Flutie’s Hail Mary but shanked it when discussing the Patriots’ first Super Bowl win, saying that Jason Varitek split the uprights.
