Conman listens in on fast food orders before delivering EMPTY boxes and stealing money
Police are hunting the unusual con artist who sells empty food wrappers to unsuspecting customers after lurking in takeaway shops
Police are hunting a bogus delivery man who sells empty takeaway boxes to unsuspecting customers.
The con artist lurks in fast food shops, listens to telephone orders and then races to the address with an empty kebab box.
One victim in Grimsby, 27-year-old Hollie Belton, paid £12 for what should have been two large chicken kebabs from - but got nothing.
She said: "I thought it was strange when he arrived 20 minutes before I had asked them to deliver."
Verona's Pizzeria owner Mostafa Majeed said: "It's going to make people think twice about ordering kebabs and pizzas. Its worrying."
Mr Majeed told the Grimsby Telegraph that staff at the Cleethorpes takeaway had noticed a man acting suspiciously in the shop earlier that night.
He said: "He was asked if he was waiting to be served and he said he needed time to look at the menu. He walked out, came back in and started enquiring about different things – do we deliver to Grimsby and what is the minimum order to Grimsby."
Mr Majeed has offered to provide CCTV footage of the man to police.
Police confirmed they were investigating.
A spokesman said "It's an unusual case."
The man was described as about 29, with a pale, gaunt face and dressed in a navy hoodie with black cap and light grey trousers and black trainers.
