The inexplicable contrail streaking through the sky about the Portsmouth area [PA/FLORENCE LEHMANN]
The contrail – a thin water vapour trail that forms behind an aircraft – suggests an as-yet unidentified flying object swerved abruptly as it flew over Hampshire.
The mysterious contrail then banks sharply again, leaving a sharp hook shape etched into the sky, above Portsmouth.
Teacher Florence Lehmann first saw the puzzling shape as she left her Southsea home at around 7.20am.
She explained: "It's really weird. It looks like the pilot sneezed or fell asleep.

"Somebody said a UFO had been spotted recently in the area and the pilot had tried to avoid it, which I quite like the sound of.
"There was no wind this morning and the plane actually moved trajectory".
Nats – a UK air traffic company specialising in controlling flight navigation – released a statement saying it had "no knowledge" of the pictured flight.
A spokeswoman explained: "Unfortunately Nats has no knowledge of the purpose of any given flight and we do not identify individual aircraft to members of the public".
The news comes less than a week after a UFO was pictured swooping above Portsmouth.
In that case, Met Office experts categorically ruled out that the dark, saucer-shaped shape pictured in the eerie photo was related to the weather.
Many believe that it was a UFO – and that this contrail is evidence of a second visit.
Lewis Rogers, 26, who took the now-infamous Portsmouth UFO snap, said: "My initial thought was it was an aeroplane but it was just moving too quickly.
"I was the only one who saw it who was quick enough to take the picture. I definitely believe in UFOs.
"I often look up at the sky in the evening wondering if there is anything or anyone else out there
