The rare procedure was performed on a man suffering with one permanently milky-white pupil – the result of a serious childhood eye injury.

William Watson, 58, had to be AWAKE as he lay and watched while the tattoo artists carefully punctured and injected the ink into his eyeball.

Mr Watson, from New York, was hit by a ball when he was young – leaving him with one discoloured eye which he said attracted unwanted attention from strangers.

The unsightly cosmetic operation – which lasted one hour – will do nothing to improve his condition but will instead give the eye the appearance of being fixed.

Speaking after procedure, Mr Watson said: "It felt like someone was rubbing it - that's about it.

"It went smoothly, no nothing what so ever. It was nice.

I can't believe how much better I look on the outside and how much better I feel inside.

"Dr Chynn gave me a way to normality I didn't even know existed six months ago. I feel much more confidence in myself".

Dr. Emil Chynn of Park Ave SafeSight and CJ Pento, tattooed the eyeball, assisting by a tattoo artist from the Red Legged Devils tattoo shop in Brooklyn, New York, who advised and mixed the correct colours.

Dr Chynn practised the delicate pupil-tattooing manoeuvres on a GRAPE before the operation.

Mr Watson explained: "It will be a big change. I won't have the scar tissue no more and I'll be able to look people in the eye without people saying too much about it".
