Jay Reich breeds false widow spiders, and is desperately trying to prove that they are harmless
All over the country, people are gripped by False Widow spider terror, avoiding their sheds and basements for fear of coming across the eight-legged creatures.
But one woman, Jay Reich, is desperately trying to collect the venomous spiders - and even says she wants to be bitten by one to prove how harmless they are.
She said: "I think all of this panic is ridiculous - they're no more harm than a wasp.
"These spiders have been here for 200 years and they've not done anything, I don't understand why people get so terrified of them."
Jay lives in Bracknell with a growing collection of the creatures - she currently has three adult false widow spiders and ten babies.
"They are most definitely pets," she admitted. "I will defend them as I would my cat, and I have genuinely grown to love this female."
Jay has named the mother Cilla - and said she is impressed by how "sweet" the spider is.
"A human handling her just seems to turn her into the spider version of a scared little girl who just wants to hide in her bed so the closet monster doesn't get her.
"They get so scared of humans, they just huddle together and try and create a web. That's all they want to do."
The panic of recent weeks - including a school that was closed down in Gloucestershire because of an infestation - angers the 26-year-old.
